We’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of Helen Mirren’s Winchester Mystery House supernatural thriller, which opened today. So we’re devastated by the reviews of the movie which are overwhelmingly not great. In fact, they’re terrible.
The story behind Sarah Winchester and her labyrinthian mansion is a fascinating one, but CBR called the movie “an absolute waste of the Winchester Mystery House.” The NYT says “this super-silly feature … stubbornly resists being classed up,” despite Mirren’s presence. Uproxx only managed a live blog, and much of that was about the Nunes memo.
We are exceedingly disappointed.
- Hold on, Margaret Atwood isn’t making money off of Hulu’s Handmaid’s Tale series? Apparently, she’s only being paid as an executive consultant and isn’t receiving royalties or anything for having created the original work since she had already sold the rights for the atrocious 1990 movie. At least the recent increase in book sales has profits going to her. (via Jezebel)

- The father of three girls who were abused by Larry Nassar attacked the former gymnastics doctor during the survivor’s testimony hearings last week. Warning: the video is incredibly upsetting. (via BuzzFeed)
- Also very upsetting: apparently, the majority of high school students (92%!) don’t recognize slavery as a central cause of the Civil War. (via SPLC)
